Mechtild Opel is a freelance author. She graduated in Cultural Sciences at Humboldt University, Berlin in 1984. In 2008, she authored the German book “Kanadas maritime Provinzen mit Newfoundland und Labrador” (considered as the most competent German travel book about Newfoundland and Labrador), with new editions in 2011 and extended in 2016. Wolfgang Opel is author and photographer. He worked as an engineer and IT specialist for more than 30 years but was always involved in writing and nature photography. For the last 20 years, Mechtild and Wolfgang travelled worldwide with deepening interest in people, culture and nature. They have travelled on several occasions to Labrador, Nunavut and other circumpolar countries. Their book entitled Kanada Länderporträt was released in March 2013, more editions in 2015/2018. In 2014, Eisbären. Wanderer auf dünnem Eis” was published. Wolfgang’s book Kanada – Nova Scotia – 50 Highlights abseits der ausgetretenen Pfade war released in March 2018.
They are active in various research projects surrounding the involvement of Germans in the Arctic and are publishing regularly on travel and history topics in German magazines. Currently they are working, among others, on a book about the life of Johann August Miertsching who travelled as Inuktitut interpreter on HMS Investigator 1850-54 in search for the lost Franklin Expedition and the Northwest passage, after serving in Labrador with the Moravian Brethren.
Ullrich Wannhoff is a German visual artist, photographer, writer and explorer who has spent much time in the Arctic, among others in Siberia. Numerous exhibitions showed his paintings; his art books are bibliophile treasures, and his Siberia related books are real gems for all people interested in nature and history of Russia’s Far East; one of these is Der stille Fluss Kamtschatka, another one Der weite Weg nach Fernost.
